Why Do Humans Have Hearts?

Why do humans have hearts?
I sat down and asked God

If we had no hearts, we would never hurt
Be never bitter, never upset, never sad
A lost love would amount only to a lost chance
A lost life? Nothing more than a lost number

Why do humans have hearts?
Why not make us strong and unfeeling?

Ah, if every care in the world could be unraveled
Like a mathematical equation upon a chalkboard
The passing of time would be only chronology
The tugging of heartstrings, mere biology

And God whispered to my ear gently so
My child, I gave you a heart because I had one too
And may your heart
Someday find its way back to mine.
